Gallery Using cats to express human feeling and emotion has become a hallmark of Victoria Chick’s work. She says, “ I never tire of cat images. I find infinite possibilities for expressing ideas and feelings with them as subjects.” The works below are part of a series called “ Prophets, Apostles, and Sages”, in which other objects are symbolically included
These paintings represent a new series incorporating my interest in old
crate labels from the 1930's and 40's.The "labels" are painted on a
separate piece of canvas and bonded to the main canvas with acrylic
medium.
The Old Ladies series began when I was a registered art therapist in a residential medical facility. It would have violated the residents’ privacy to depict them realistically. Their body language was the interesting thing to me anyway, so I did many acrylic drawings showing no facial characteristics. Outside therapy work, I found models to pose for paintings based on psychological types. The borders were inspired by old wallpaper patterns. Each border reflects the personality of the figure in the painting. Works on paper are 16” x 20” framed size including a generous mat.
As the Old Ladies' usual place was sitting in a chair, that piece of furniture came to represent, for me, the world in which they operated. When cats serve as metaphors for people, the chair continues to be an important symbol for the limits or the safety often sought. The line represents the edge between conscious action and subconscious thought while the relationship of the figures to the line indicate their relationship to each other. This series, as well as one integrating cats and people is one I return to frequently.
